Senior Citizens and Driving: A Precarious Situation

When people get older it is normal for their driving abilities to change. It does not mean that they have to stop driving; it just means that they have to be a little more careful.
Here is a list of safety tips old people should follow to ensure their safety.

The first tip I can offer all senior drivers is that they need to understand how their aging can affect their driving.

It is common fact that older drivers are more likely to receive traffic citations than younger drivers. As a matter of fact, fatal car crashes occur when the driver reaches the age of 70.
Now, you’re probably wondering how the heck this happened, right?
When we get older there are factors in our bodies that change.

Factors such as decreased vision, slow motor reflex and impaired hearing. And because of this the chances of being involved in car accidents when you’re older is increased.
As you get older, things get more critical. A senior’s driving ability changes and in order to drive safely, you have to be aware of these changes.

Another problem regarding senior drivers is the issue of their health. So it is always important for you to take charge of it.

Wear corrective lenses to improve your eye sight, use hearing aids if prescribed. And most importantly you have to go and get checked up as often as you can to know if you are still in the condition to drive.

Since you are in risk of traffic accidents, you have to know your limitations.

If there are driving situations that make you comfortable then don’t. Stop trying to convince yourself that you could’ve done it before. Things change when you get older.
One more thing you should always take in account is the opinion of others.

It may be hard to hear other’s opinion specially if some of them tend to be negative. But believe it or not these opinions are shared because they value your safety. If other people believe that you should stop driving, then you have to step back and look at it from their point of view.

Just because you are getting older it does not mean you have to give up the things you used to do. But when your own safety and the safety of others is involved you have to weight in your options, take time to look at the big picture and step back.

The Dangers of Driving with Drowsiness

Just as the name suggests, sleep deprived driving is operating a vehicle while the driver is cognitively impaired due to lack of sleep [[*source: Wikipedia*]].

Studies show that sleep deprivation is one the major cause of car accidents along with driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a survey on 1998, 23% of drivers had fallen asleep while driving.

The effects of sleep deprivation is certainly very lethal and dangerous specially if you’re behind the wheel.

Here are just a few things that can occur to a sleep deprived driver.

  • Impairs coordination
  • Impaired reaction time
  • Short term memory
  • Decreased
  • Increase moodiness

So now that we know the dangers of driving while feeling drowsy it is important to know how to prevent it from happening.

The first thing we can do to avoid sleep deprived driving is probably the obvious thing. And that is getting enough sleep.

If you have to drive the following day, make sure you have at least 7 hours of sleep the night before. The next thing you can do is open your car window. The fresh air in your face will wake you up.  You can also try slapping yourself awake.

If I would put my two cents in, I would suggest you drink a lot of water.

Feeling hydrated is a good way to keep you awake.

If you are driving for more than just a few hours make sure you have someone you can switch with.

If possible, if you’re going on a long trip, never drive alone. If you have no choice and you are driving alone and you’re starting to feel a little drowsy, then you should pull over and park at a safe spot, turn your engine off and go to sleep.

Napping for just a few minutes can be a very big help. So remember this the next time you feel your eyes getting heavy while you’re behind the wheel.

These tips may seem simple enough but, knowing the dangers of sleep deprived driving, these simple tips can very well save your life.

Common Causes of Car Accidents

I’ve recently been reading articles on the internet regarding traffic accidents and I was quite shocked of how many there have been this year.

One example is an accident which occurred in Lake Shore wherein three people were seriously injured. But I won’t be getting into that. If you want to learn more about this incident visit this site: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-3-cars-involved-in-lake-shore-drive-wreck-20120209,0,5337861.story

What I will be blogging about is the general issue of traffic accidents. Research shows that over 40,000 deaths occur from car accidents yearly. Now that’s a lot of numbers to take in.

But what does cause car accidents. Well, I’ve stumbled upon a few articles on the internet and they seem to have at least a few reasons in common. So I’ve taken all those causes and decided to share them with you.

Ok the first and probably most obvious reason which is reckless driving.

This could mean two things.

Distracted driving, wherein the driver is focused on something else rather than his driving or the road. He could be talking or texting on his phone, or even just looking away for a second. Or it could be drunk driving which is pretty much self explanatory.

Another cause of traffic accident is disregarding traffic rules.

I think I don’t need to explain why this particular cause pisses me off! Some of the few things these geniuses do are: running a traffic light, running a stop sign and speeding. I mean, I can understand drunk and distracted drivers because sometimes they can’t really help it. But those who are in the right mind but still end up doing something stupid just cause they don’t care  how much it will affect others should really need to get slapped.

The third cause of traffic accidents is probably the most inevitable.

It’s when the accident is caused by something you didn’t expect, something you could’ve stopped if you had been prepared for it. I’m talking about unfortunate yet very random misfortunes. Bad luck such as heavy rain and

Unfortunately, these are just a few causes of traffic accidents that happen almost every week.

So there you go. Hopefully now that we know some of the things that can cause fatal traffic accidents it will open our eyes to be a little more aware of our surroundings, to be a little more considerate of the law and to be a little more prepared for anything.

Basic car safety tips

Safety should always be your number one priority. Especially if you have a car. We all know that having a car is great. And driving it is beyond awesome. Yes, there’s nothing compared to the feeling of being free on the road.

But sometimes we get so caught up in the hype and excitement of owning a car that we forget to follow some procedures to keep ourselves and our car safe.

With the number of drivers increasing almost every month, car safety has become extremely important. And that shouldn’t be surprising considering the many, many car and traffic accidents that occurred over the years. 2009, for instance, had over 34,000 deaths caused by car accidents.

It is such a shame because if people just followed the right procedures of traffic safety.

None of us ever want to go through anything horrible when we’re on the road. So in this post, I’m going to give out a few tips so you can be safe on the road.

The most important thing you need to remember is to be alert. Make sure you are wide awake and focused when you’re driving.

Don’t ever drive when you’re feeling sleepy or tired. Driving while sleep deprived is just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. If you ever feel drowsy while driving try opening your window or drinking water. It is also important that you focus on the road. Refrain from doing anything else that may distract you from driving. Looking away from the road to check your messages for just a few minutes may cause a lot of lives.

The second safety tip is follow traffic law!

It is a total shame that there are some inconsiderate jerks who refuse to follow this rule. Some traffic accidents are caused by drivers who think it’s a good a idea to disregard and ignore traffic laws.

My third tip is the simplest but important one and that is to be prepared. If you’re ever driving in certain conditions make sure you are ready for them.

If you’re driving through the rain make sure you have your taillight and your wipers on. Make sure you keep at a steady direction and avoid any sudden turns. Don’t ever attempt to drive over flood water for it may be deeper than it looks.

These are just a couple of tips. There are still so many you can do. If we all step back and take the time to be prepared, considerate and to be a little wiser, then we could end up saving a lot of lives.

Specially our own.
